Vol. 2 Issue 22

Number of the Day: 53
I captured an image from the Promethean Board. This is what students shared today. So much growth since day 1. What will students share when we reach 100?

Wish List Items:
As always, if you are willing and able, please send an email to the group.
  • 6 Headphones
  • Antibacterial Wipes (Clorox preferred, but not required).
  • 6 Boxes of Colored Perncils
  • Printer Paper
  • Construction Paper (any color)
As we begin our inquiry into weather patterns, you can reinforce our classroom exploration by clicking the above link (or below the picture). This is a scholastic listen and read book that introduces students to the world of a meteorologist.

Drench Mr. Champion Friday:  Students filled the Compliment Jar, once again, and voted! This Friday, October 26, will be Drench Mr. Champion Friday!!! At 1:15, we will fill the balloons with water and.... Well, you know. Fun. We will need the following to make Friday a reality:
  • A photographer - I won't be able to hold a camera because I'll be all wet.
  •  A parent volunteer to send 2 bags of water balloons by Friday morning.
  • A parent volunteer to fill balloons from 11:55 - 12:15 on Friday.

Vol. 1 Issue 52

Pajama Day:
As a result of our student initiated shift in positive behavior reward systems,
the class is on track to earning an end-of-year pajama day (ask about the new
compliment jar). This will most likely happen on Wednesday, May 9 (they should
fill the jar by Tuesday at the latest - hint hint ). On this day, students are
encouraged to wear their favorite set of pajamas. Students may bring slippers
(to change into), but should come to school wearing athletic shoes (for recess
and P.E.). Students are also encouraged (but not required) to bring lunch school
on this day. We will eat lunch in the classroom. Make sure students pack their
favorite books and sleeping bags (bags not required. may be too much to carry.
especially if riding the bus).

Final Spelling Test:
Performance on last week's spelling test shows me that students need another week to practice and master the rule (not adding this to the grade book). I will add the rule to this Friday's test (sight words, not red). The combined test will be the students' last.

End-of-Year Mathematics Assessment:
We will begin our end-of-year math assessment on Thursday, May 10. This assessment covers skills that should have been mastered from units 1-9. Although students have been practicing skills in class daily, they will not receive a formal review (mock test) because this assessment will serve as a true indicator of what concepts and skills students mastered (and committed to memory) this year.

Spelling Test Update: I sent our current spelling list home prematurely. Please note that students will not be tested on these words until Friday, 3/3/12. We will not have a spelling test this Friday. Please keep the list and continue practice for next weeks test. If you do not have a list, please click the homework tab.

Math Update: I am sending home Unit 6 tests today. Please keep these at home and use them to review skills for missed items. I sent home the math mid-year assessment with progress reports last week. Please review the mid-year and send this assessment back to school. It will be returned to you during student conferences in march. Stay tuned for conference times and info.

    • APS Student Guidebook (featuring your favorite teacher on page 19)

  • We have Number Talks every morning to start our day (morning meeting). Today, our investigation focused on the number  18. I asked students to generate number sentences ( + tally marks) that = 18. This is not a competitive activity. The differentiation is built-in. They generate sentences based on their comfort level/level of understanding. As students share and learn new strategies, they challenge themselves during future Number Talks. Here is the result of today's investigation:
