IB Unit In Action: Helping Others

This week, students prepared and organized candy grams for our 1st grade annual candy gram sale. this activity is linked to our central idea, helping others in need is one of our responsibilities as a member of a community, and our line of inquiry, how one's actions affects others. Students understand that their efforts help to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House.

Readers Theater: Media Center Performances

This fall, students read The Rhyming Dust Bunnies. Readers’ Theater is an activity in which students, while reading directly from scripts, are able to tell a story in a most entertaining form, with or without props, costumes, or sets. This is a reading activity, and students are not asked to memorize their lines. They are, however, encouraged to "ham it up" and use intonation and gestures appropriate to their characters and their characters’ words. Ms. Gillogly did an awesome job preparing our students for their 1st performance. Our next Readers' Theater will take place next semester.

Working on Words: Contractions

This week, students were introduced to contractions. To practice this skill, try the following game @ home.

Flash Card Game

This game is easy to make. Using plain index cards and colorful markers, write contractions on one side of the card, and the two words used to form the contraction on the opposite side. Here are some possible contractions to write on the flash cards:

can not: can't

does not: doesn't

do not: don't

will not: won't

should not: shouldn't

would not: wouldn't

Sit in your living room floor. Break out some popcorn and treat this like a board game. Hold up a card on one side, and let your child tell you what should be on the other side. For each correct response, place the flash card in a pile. Incorrectly answered cards will go back in the pile to do over. Go over the cards until all cards end up in the correct response pile. Give your child a sticker or other small reward for a job well done.
