Holiday Outreach: Candy Grams & Winter Festival

During the month of December, first grade students are involved in a meaningful and exciting Community Outreach Project. Our project will benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Buckhead, a non-profit organization that houses sick children and their families while they receive life-saving treatments from area hospitals. In order to accomplish this goal, we will sponsor, organize and facilitate many activities to raise money. Thanks to all families for sending candy canes and shoe boxes. We currently have a few volunteers, but we need many volunteers to help make this year's effort a success.

The Candy-Gram Sale on December 5th and 6th is a time when all students at Sarah Smith may purchase a candy gram for .25 cents to send to another person at Sarah Smith. The candy gram will be attached to a candy cane and delivered to the student’s classroom. The selling date for our class is Monday, December 5, 2011 at the Primary Campus auditorium, from 7:15a.m.-8:00a.m. At the time of this post, we currently have 2 volunteers, but need two more volunteers to collect money at our class' table. The children in my class will attach the messages to candy canes (Wed. & Thurs.) and they will all be delivered on Friday, December 9th. If you can spare 45 minutes tomorrow morning, we could sure use your help.

The winter Festival is our major fund-raiser. This is an after school event that offers make and take crafts and ther fun activities for the children. Each first grade class will set up two tables in the gym to allow children to participate in the different activities. The cost for the crafts will range in price from .50 cents to $1.00. The event will be held in the Sarah Smith Gymnasium on Thursday, December 15, 2011 from 2:45-4:00. For this event our class will need 10 volunteers: two people will need to arrive at 2:00 to set up the crafts in the gym, four replacement volunteers are needed from 2:45-3:30 and four more from 3:30-4:15 to help the children make crafts and clean up. Our craft/service tables will be determined this week. As soon as we (teachers) have decided (as a grade-level team), Karen Kerness will send you the details via email. At the time of this post, these are our volunteers for the winter festival:

Sharing Holiday Traditions: December 12 - December 15

In an effort to get our students to learn more about each other, I need family volunteers to come in and share traditions behind three fall/winter holidays: Christmas, Muharram, and Hanukkah. If you'd like to share, please contact me and we can coordinate a time that works for you. Volunteers can bring in artifacts, story books, and/or food associated with the holiday. No more than two volunteers are needed to share each holiday, and families can collaborate (if two are coming to share the same holiday).
