Fall Parent - Teacher Conferences
I look forward beginning the conversation about your child’s progress in the 1st grade. This is also my opportunity to gain insights into my students’ home and community lives. Your perspectives on your child’s strengths and needs, learning styles, and non-school learning opportunities can help shape my instructional methods. Fall Conferences begin on Oct. 5 and end on October 23. Please click SignUpGenius to reserve a slot. You will receive an email reminder two days prior to your scheduled conference. Each parent-teacher conference will last for a period no longer than 20 minutes. If you meet with me before 10/14, you will receive an unofficial copy of your child’s 1st-quarter report card (grading window closes on 10/14). If you meet with me after 10/14, you will receive an official 1st quarter report card. Both parents are encouraged to come, if possible. Please reserve a slot by Wednesday,September 30th.This is a parents-only conference. During spring conferences, students will attend and facilitate discussions about their progress.

Red Words
The class has been learning red words for several weeks. We practice red words daily using a multi-sensory approach (including writing, spelling, tracing, and reading via arm tapping). Red words are words that don't follow spelling rules. These are words that students need to memorize.  Students keep a list in their red word folder to keep track of their accomplishments. This will be an ongoing practice as students learn new words throughout the year. Remember to practice new red words at home (and to review previously taught words). Learning these words will lead to improved reading fluency.  If you need clarity, I will discuss red words during our fall parent-teacher conferences. You will always find a current list of red words here (click the spelling hyperlink on the homework page).

Fall Book Fair
Kids are excited about our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. An amazing selection of books is headed our way! At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. Mark your calendar for our Family Event where the whole family can join in the fun. And, you can contribute books to your child's classroom library. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading.
