AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor
children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, he/she takes a short
quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child
understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based
on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals
and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using AR choose their own books
to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much
more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to
them.
Teachers and media specialists help students choose books at an
appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating,
ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success. Beginning next week, students will only be allowed to check out books at their reading level. This level will change as students become more fluent readers throughout the year.
If a student does not do well on the quiz, I may help him/her:
- Choose another book that is more appropriate.
- Ask more probing questions as your child reads and before he takes a quiz.
- Pair your child with another student, or even have the book read to your child.
In
most cases, children really enjoy taking the quizzes. The quizzes are not
calculated in any reading or language arts grade and are simply used to monitor
comprehension. Since they’re reading books at their reading and interest
levels, they are likely to be successful. This is satisfying for most children.
Best of all, they learn and grow at their own pace. Students usually checkout
books and take quizzes at the rate of 2-3 per week. This is an average, not a
requirement. Please allow students enough time to read and comprehend a book
before taking a quiz (read 2-3 times for short selections and once for chapter
books). Students will not take quizzes daily and are not expected to take a
quiz for books that are checked out one pay prior. Please remember that
students should keep books in their book bags, whether they have completed readings
or not.

Upcoming Field Trip
During our trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center (date emailed yesterday), students will discover a variety of plants and animals that call Georgia home and will determine what they need to survive in the natural world. After visiting, students should understand that plants and animals have basic needs that must be met in order to survive. Students will learn while having fun!
Remember:
- If your child has a Sarah Smith shirt (blue), please have him/her wear it on the day of the trip. If not, please wear any shirt with the school name (or any blue shirt).
- Athletic shoes or boots only. We will be hiking on a trail. This will be a difficult task in sandals.
