Fall Parent - Teacher Conferences
I look forward beginning the conversation about your child’s progress in the 1st grade. This is also my opportunity to gain insights into my students’ home and community lives. Your perspectives on your child’s strengths and needs, learning styles, and non-school learning opportunities can help shape my instructional methods. Fall Conferences begin on Oct. 10 and end on October 24. Please click SignUpGenius to reserve a slot. You will receive an email reminder two days prior to your scheduled conference. Each parent-teacher conference will last for a period no longer than 20 minutes. If you meet with me before 10/16, you will receive an unofficial copy of your child’s 1st-quarter report card (grading window closes on 10/15). If you meet with me after 10/16, you will receive an official 1st quarter report card. Both parents are encouraged to come, if possible. Please reserve a slot by Wednesday, October 2nd.This is a parents-only conference. During spring conferences, students will attend and facilitate discussions about their progress.
Red Words
The class has been working on learning red words for several weeks. We practice red words daily using a multi-sensory approach (including writing, spelling, tracing, and reading via arm tapping). Red words are words that (usually) don't follow spelling rules. These are words that students need to memorize. Today I began quizzing students on the red words we've learned since August. When students correctly read and spell the words without hesitation, we release these words from the red word ring and send them home. This is an informal assessment. Students record words in their red word books to keep track of their accomplishments. Not all students will be tested today. This will be an ongoing practice as students learn new words throughout the year. Remember to celebrate with students whenever you see red words come home. If you need clarity, I will discuss red words during our fall parent-teacher conferences.
