Field Trip: March 15, 2013
The Atlanta History Center
Roots of the
Past: Exploring an 1860s Georgia Farm
Duration: 2
hours
Would you like
to live on a farm during the 1860s? If so, what job would you like to have?
What work would you not want to have? Or would you have a choice? Students
discover answers to these questions and others as they travel back to the 1860s
Piedmont to experience a working farm. As they move from one seasonal task to
another, they encounter interpreters portraying laborers who encourage young
travelers to assist in the work necessary for survival. Each day on the farm is
different as participants are immersed in a variety of activities, such as
blacksmith apprenticing, harvesting crops, caring for the home, and learning
about enslaved people. After they return to the modern world, students have a
better understanding of the needs and accomplishments of farm living.
This is an outdoor tour; please dress appropriately.
