Celebrating Chinese New Year!!!
Gong Xi Fa Ca! That’s the traditional Chinese New Year greeting that means “wishing you prosperity” in Mandarin. The first day of the Chinese New Year, which began at midnight on January 23, 2012, is the most important of Chinese holidays, celebrated by over 1.3 billion people in China and by millions of ethnic Chinese around the world. It’s a celebration that lasts for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival. Each year is associated with one of twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. For 2012, it’s the Year of the Dragon.
Sandra shared gifts with the class. We were all given Lucky Red envelopes with beautiful messages and chocolate. Sandra's mom shared egg rolls with students, gifted the class with a beautiful read lantern, and read a story about Chinese New Year to students (she was also Friday's Mystery Reader).

Emperor Penguin Parents: An Animal Survival Activity
As a part of our current IB unit, Animal Survival, students assumed the roles of Emperor Penguin parents. During our unit, students learned that the male Emperor incubates the egg, while walking, under a warm flap of skin. Monday, students were responsible for caring for egg for the entire day. We did have a few cracks and drops, but overall, the students were very good parents and took extra special care of their eggs, ensuring their unhatched children made it home safely.
